WCW: Ro Fino musician + activist

Activism has increased since "you-know-who" has been elected. It's awesome seeing folks use their platform to give back in their own way.  My friend, musician Ro Fino, is one of those examples!

IMG_3709.JPG

I met Ro at Rockwood Musichall through our friend Christine, we instantly clicked right away both being Queens gals!  She was one of many that attended the historic Women's March in Washington last month. She was pumped as was I, from marching and wanted to keep the momentum going.

Using social media for good Ro created-Not My President: A Monthly Show of Resistance.  The first show is February 19th, very fitting as it is President's Day weekend 😏.

Past WCW post, Rock The Button will sell their popular buttons at the event.   Proceeds from the Sunday night show will go to Planned Parenthood!

In between working and saving the world, I had the opportunity to do a Q & A with Ro, check it out!

O.C.O: What inspired you to create this monthly initiative?

R.F: I've been involved in activism my entire adult life, but after the election, I just felt like I was not doing enough.  I went to the women's march in DC, but as I drove home I worried that I and others might lose the momentum.  As a musician/bartender, I don't have much money coming in that isn't being used for living expenses, but I thought what if I start using my music for the cause? I reached out to my friends who are musicians and artists, everyone was so willing to lend their time and their talents.  I received so much positive feedback, I realized I could make this a monthly thing.

O.C.O: Who are your music influences?

R.F: I'm really influenced by strong women songwriters.  I was raised on a heavy dose of Ani Difranco, Patti Smith, Stevie Nicks and then on my own I found bands like Hole and Bikini Kill. I truly love American music from Robert Johnson to Bruce Springsteen.  And I would be nothing without Bob Dylan.

O.C.O: What is next for "Not My President: A Monthly Show of Resistance"?

R.F: That's a great question and something that has been haunting me all month haha! I'm thinking for sanity's sake, next month's show will be a little more acoustic and stripped down, then for April we come back with the big bands. We're looking to make donations to Standing Rock, ACLU, CAIR-NY, Border Angels, and Campaign Zero in the upcoming months.

O.C.O: Planned Parenthood is the first organization the initiative is collaborating with, why were they yourfirst choice?

R.F: Planned Parenthood was the first organization I chose because of my own personal relationship with them.  As a lower middle class woman, they really are the only resource I can afford to get my yearly pap smear. Every time I've gone there, I have been treated with respect and patience and felt completely comfortable.  We need more health centers like this and the negative commentary surrounding Planned Parenthood really upsets me since so often it isn't factual.

O.C.O: What activism songs inspire you?

R.F: There is so many, it's hard to only name a few!  I can tell you the ones I'm playing at the show at Legion Bar this Sunday, they are "Children of The Revolution" by TRex and "People Have The Power" by Patti Smith.  A couple other favorites are "To The Teeth" by Ani Difranco, "American Skin" by Bruce Springsteen, "Strange Fruit" by Billie Holiday, "Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" by Bob Dylan, and of course "This Land Is Your Land" by Woody Guthrie.

Come out to Legion with me this Sunday night support a rad initiative for $10! Stick it to the system enjoying an amazing group of musicians + bond with fellow resistance fighters!

Combine art, joy, hope, strength, booze and you have a very powerful force to be recogned with!

Today we Create: Hunter Haute Issue #1

Hi Friends!

First and foremost, I hope everyone is coping as best as they can during these difficult times.   It’s easy to get sucked into negativity (points to self), and I am sure we are seeing the same TV and Social Media messages saying “we need to come together” yes that is true. But if we are getting together just to point the finger, then what’s the point?!

Bottom line, times like these we have to CREATE.  Putting more effort into creating right now can unify people. I strongly believe that.

I have been working on HUNTER HAUTE for 6 years now.  It’s an idea that came from my love of fashion and comic books/pop culture. I have my amazing sister’s and brother’s to thank for that.  I remember coming up with the concept on a Friday night writing character descriptions and plots for particular issues.  When I got laid off 2 years ago and had a lot of time to revaluate LIFE. I came across the file while cleaning out my computer.  Reread it, got inspired to look at how I can make this a reality instead of a unfinished project.

The next steps I took were the following:

·      Researching folks to help me I want to give a special thanks to my team Phil Buck and Candace Lee, this was a long process and I am forever grateful.

·      Saved $$-cause well being creative can cost ya J.

·      Revised plots-things change between 2009 and 2014.

·      Got the series Copyrighted-cause this is the Internet.

AND HERE WE ARE :)

Early this summer,  I spoke my with aunt Gwen about the upcoming completion; she was very excited for me!  She was ecstatic and I sent her the issue via email for her to read.  The next day, she passed away; I dedicate Issue #1 of Hunter Haute to her.

Without further ado, I would like to introduce Hunter Haute Issue #1:

Something Wicked This Way Comes- Wizarding World of Harry Potter review

Enter the World of Harry Potter. Your ticket to Universal Studios is a portkey into the storybook world of JK Rowling. WTF is a portkey? A portkey is an ordinary object that has been charmed to transport anyone who touches it to another place.  This portkey takes transports you to two very unique experiences at Universal Studios and Universal Studios Islands of Adventure.

The day my family and I went to Universal Studios, it rained a bit and to my surprise the park was empty. We actually walked pass the entrance to Diagon Alley, when we finally found it we realized this was where everyone ventured to!

Universal Studios goes all out when it comes to attention to detail!  Diagon Alley is the perfect example!  It was created to transport fans into the Harry Potter world of books and movies.

A few highlights of "must see" places are the "Knight Bus", "Hogwarts Express" and "King's Cross Station", "Ollivander's", and "Gringott's Money Exchange"

The Butterbeer was delish, I went to PotterCon in NYC where they had more of a cocktail version of the drink, this version was rad! I will try the ice cream next time :)

To get to Hogsmade we had to board the Hogwarts Express, I loved that they made the waiting experience interactive, the wait didn't seem long at all!

Yea we ran into Harry, Ron, and Hermonie on the train...

Enter Hogsmeade!!!

DSC05916.jpg

The tour of Hogwarts castle is what MAKES Hogsmeade in addition to the tour there is a ride as well. It was in between a mini roller coaster and an interactive ride, so much fun!

Dumbledore's office, during the tour of this, Harry, Ron, and Hermonie are in Harry's invisibility cloak. It was pretty rad hearing those characters again!

The infamous sorting hat. At PotterCon I got sorted into Hufflepuff, on Pottermore I got sorted into Slytherin... I'm all kinds of confused lmao!  If you are in Florida or California you have to make The Wizard World of Harry Potter a thing to do.  Don't worry about not knowing the world, learn as you go and have fun!

The Batman Movie we deserve...

Comic book fans will finally be able to experience the iconic graphic novel Batman: The Killing Joke in a special, one-evening-only movie event on Monday July 25th before owning it on Blu-ray & DVD August 3rd.  Check out the trailer below:

Based on one of the best-selling graphic novels of all time, the film is the first ever DC animation to receive an R Rating (smart move also competes to what Marvel does with Netflix).  The film brings together some of the creative team behind Batman: The Animated Series with executive producer Bruce Timm at the helm and Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill returning to their seminal roles as Batman and The Joker, respectively.   Any 90s kid remembers Batman: The Animated Series, I would rush to get home at 4:00 just to make sure I didn’t miss the opening credits.  It was one of the shows that got me into reading comic books :)  The show was way ahead of it’s time….Frankly, no CGI superhero show at the moment can f*ck with the storytelling of Batman: The Animated Series.   So many great episodes: Robin’s Reckoning, Harley & Ivy, and Christmas with The Joker are some of my favs check them out in these clips:

For those not familiar with Batman: The Killing Joke, it is a graphic novel takes a journey into the dark psyche of The Joker, from his beginnings as a struggling comedian to his fateful encounter with Batman. Years later, and now escaped from Arkham Asylum, The Joker devises a plan to prove that one bad day can make anyone as insane as he is – setting his sights on Commissioner Gordon.  I own the novel myself, it’s a fantastic read and does bring some insight to why The Joker is so damn cray! All he wanted was a break we can all relate to that!

Batman The Killing Joke, was published by DC Comics in 1988. Along with being NY Times best seller, the graphic novel has maintained an unparalleled popularity throughout its 28 years.

“Batman: The Killing Joke” will hit theaters on July 25. Tickets are available here.  I strongly recommend reading the novel, it’s a great read for all!
